Affordable housing is a basic human right, and the State government should ensure that secure and affordable housing is available throughout Western Australia.

Giz believes more needs to be done to make houses more energy and water efficient – for the good of both the environment and households budgets.

Giz has initiated or supported the following measures to improve housing in WA:

• ensuring inclusion of public housing and senior accommodation at the Perry Lakes sustainable housing development;
• raising questions about affordable housing in Parliament through questions and speeches;
• pushing for the completion of the review of the Residential Tenancies Act 1987; and
• supporting tenants through amendments to the Residential Parks (Long Stay Tenants) Bill 2005.

Giz has asked questions in Parliament to raise awareness about the situation of homeless people especially during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October 2011 in Perth.

Since May 2009, the Greens spokesperson for housing has been Lynn McLaren MLC.
